Simple Tips To Keep Bugs Away & Why It's Important

Andrea Cruz

Your family is in your home, and they should not have to deal with little critters crawling on their legs. You want to do everything you can to prevent insects from invading your home. You can do that with your pest control specialist and some of the following suggestions.

How Are Insects Harmful?

Insects are not only a nuisance; they might cause the following:

  • Food can become contaminated
  • Some insects carry bacteria like salmonella
  • Allergies can be irritated as well as asthma
  • Some insects can spread diseases like Lyme disease

Be sure to talk to you pest control specialist if it's too late for prevention.

Preventative Suggestions

Consider some of the following:

The Cold Treatment

You've probably noticed that there aren't many insects out during the cold season. Or perhaps you've noticed an influx of insects in your home. This happens because insects rely on the temperature outside to regulate their own. So cold temperatures force them to find warmer areas like underground or your home if you keep it toasty.

The solution is to keep your home as cold as you can, or blast 40 degrees when you are not home. Most insects cannot handle 40 degreesSo make sure your air conditioner's condition is top notch.

Using Pest-Controlling Powder

Many people know food grade diatomaceous earth for its natural ability to aid health-related issues like boosting digestion. But, diatomaceous earth can also be used to prevent insects from invading your home. The reason is because diatomaceous earth is nothing more than fossilized single-cell organisms. These organicism, or their bodies, form sharp edges that penetrate the body of most insects.

Using Natural Oil To Repel Them

Another interesting way that you can repel insects is by making sure you burn a little cedar oil from time to time. The scent is woodsy and pleasant but is strong enough to disorient insects. The scent can also interrupt normal reproduction amongst some insects. Direct contact with the oil can cause dehydration and death, so consider making a simple spray, too. Just mix about 5 drops of the oil with 1 cup of water, and spray it around your home.

Remember that these suggestions are merely to prevent infestations and do not replace your pest specialist's advice — like Rice's Inc Termite & Pest Control — nor will they help you get rid of an infestation. But, as you can see, there are a few things you can do to protect your family from pests.
