Enjoying A Bug-Free Yard This Summer

Andrea Cruz

If you are planning on spending many of your days basking in the sun in your backyard, flying and crawling insects are visitors you will not want to have on the premises. During an otherwise enjoyable afternoon in the backyard, bugs can pester and annoy, thus ruining the atmosphere. Here are some ways you can be sure your barbecues and sunbathing sessions will not be ruined by unwanted insects this summer.

Tend To Outdoor Attractions

Insects tend to hang out in areas with overgrown shrubbery and long blades of grass. Make sure you keep your landscaping trim so insects are less likely to frequent the areas you intend on using in the summertime. Trimming brush so it is not touching swing sets, barbecues, and lawn furniture will help keep insects from using them for their webs or hideouts. If you have a wood pile, consider moving it away from gathering areas in your backyard to prevent any insects inhabiting the wooden lair from joining the human gathering and investigating your outdoor activities.

Use Light To Your Advantage

During the night-time hours on a night before you intend on spending time outdoors, turn on your back porch light so insects will congregate in this area. Most bugs are drawn to the illumination of light bulbs, making this a prime spot for them to gather. Since insects will be abundant by the lights of your back porch, they may not be as prevalent in your yard the next day during the earlier daytime hours.

Use Some Fragrant Deterrents

Many insects do not care for citronella scented areas and will stay away from them as a result. Light several citronella candles or tiki torches on an afternoon you wish to spend outdoors to keep bugs at bay. Spiders stay away from the scents of tea tree oil, lavender, and peppermint. Mix a few drops of one of these scents in an oil form inside a spray bottle with some water. Spray surfaces of furniture or yard toys to keep crawling arachnids from roosting underneath.

Call For Some Help

If insects become a huge problem, call a pest control service like Aloha Termite Kauai Inc to remove them from your property altogether. They will have chemical means to eradicate large swarms or colonies, allowing you to enjoy your outdoors without any insects to ruin your good time. If you have pets or children, ask about green products for spraying down your land.
